Matthew 5:13-16

When you really listen to Jesus and unpack what he has to say you can't help but be inspired, yet so many people who claim him as Lord have an uninspiring faith. Listen in as we discover what being "salt and light" means, and how it can inspire a world to follow Jesus.

Matthew 5:11-12

No one likes to be hurt. Everyone tries to avoid it at all costs. But Jesus tells us that following him will be painful...and it will be worth it. This begs the questions, "what does it mean to follow Jesus?" and "what do we get out of following him?" While persecution is something most people avoid at all costs Christ arrives on the stage of history and claims it is nothing less than an essential part of following him. He says that, in a mysterious way, those who are persecuted for righteousness sake are blessed and in that blessing will possess the Kingdom of Heaven. In the beatitudes Christ blesses the unexpected and as he approaches the idea of righteousness his language slightly shifts. He speaks of those who desire righteousness in terms of the most basic and primal human needs- hunger and thirst. There are those who literally and figuratively hunger and thirst for righteousness in their lives and the lives of others. Often they are treated with disdain as not being willing to accept the "real world". Christ comes and says they are blessed but not only are they blessed they will be filled, their need will be met, their hunger will be satisfied.
